Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
