The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
